Taxi driver on perjury charge

ALEXANDRA – Fake taxi hijacking lends driver in trouble.

Taxi driver Phiwe Ngubane (30) was sentenced to a three-year wholly suspended jail term by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for perjury.

He was arrested for making a false report about his hijacking in Alexandra. He informed a colleague who in turn alerted the taxi owner of the alleged hijacking by two armed suspects on 4 November last year.

They allegedly drove with him in a Toyota Avanza and dropped him in Soshanguve, Pretoria. The owner informed her tracking company which located the vehicle the same day at Halfway House shopping centre in Midrand. The company advised her to report the incident which she did at Rabie Ridge Police Station also in Midrand.

The vehicle was found with a suspect who was arrested. When questioned, he claimed to have given the accused R400 for use of the vehicle. The accused was arrested and admitted to lying claiming that he panicked after the man with the taxi delayed returning it at an agreed time.
