VIDEO: Mbopha Mashigo’s murder accused appears in court

ALEXANDRA — A 36-year-old man accused of killing prominent local businessman Mbopha Mashigo appeared briefly in the Alex Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Shortly after offering a reward of R150 000 to anyone with information which could lead to the arrest of slain businessman Mbopha Mashigo’s killer, a resident came forward with information.

The spokesperson for Alexandra police Captain Allie Kodisang said soon thereafter they got their man.

At about 12am on 13 January, the police pounced on the suspect at his home following the tip-off from an elderly woman who is said to have identified the man from the pictures that the police had circulated.

The 36-year-old suspect appeared in the Alex Magistrates’ Court on 15 January and will appear again in court on 22 January for a bail hearing. He remains in custody.

Speaking outside court, a member of the Mbopha family told Alex News the suspect was a distant relative of the family and had lived in Alex for many years.

Mashigo was shot in the head at his fast food outlet once, allegedly by the man who posed as a customer.

Apparently, the man came into the shop, bought a can of cider and exited the outlet only to return again.

“He allegedly fired one shot at Mashigo and then fired several shots while fleeing the scene,” Kodisang said.
