Alex football to meet tonight to address football hooliganism

ALEXANDRA - The ANLFA will decide tonight what action to take to stamp out football hooliganism at its matches.

The Alexandra Northrand Local Football (ANLFA) will hold an urgent meeting tonight (12 December) to address soccer hooliganism that appears to have taken root in the township.

The decision to hold the meeting followed the latest incident of violence at a soccer match at the Alexandra Stadium last Sunday (11 December) during the ANLFA Year-End Seniors Tournament semi-final game between Alex’s SAB League teams, Gauteng FC and Setheo FC.

Gauteng won the tie but aggrieved supporters of Setheo and technical staff invaded the pitch, baying for the blood of the referee, whom they accused of costing them the tie, and thereby denying them the opportunity to advance to finals where a stake of R100 00 lies in wait for the winner of this category.

ANLFA secretary general Mafika Morajane, who was on hand and got into the thick of things as he and other executives of the association tried to calm down the angry mob, said they had called an urgent meeting to address the spiraling incidents of violence at their soccer matches.

“I think it would be only proper for me to address your questions and concerns after we have met tonight as the controlling body of all things football in the township, and then issue a statement on the way forward from here,” said Morajane in response to inquiries from Alex News.

This is not the first time this year that violence and pandemonium has broken out in a soccer match in the township. Earlier this year, two incidents of violence were reported by Alex News, one of which involved Malandela Mighty Heroes and Dra FC in the ANLFA Promotional League but lack of evidence let them off the hook.

The other involved Blue Aces and Mighty Heroes, still in the same league, in which the referee too was at the centre stage of the conflict as in the Gauteng and Setheo game.

Aces was heavily fined by the ANLFA Disciplinary Committee but it would be interesting to see what measures the ANLFA will come up with to stamp out the hooliganism before it takes root.
