BREAKING: Alex residents protest over electricity cuts

ALEX - Residents of Alex take to the streets in protest, after being without electricity since Saturday.

Citizens of Alexandra barricaded Florence Mophosho Street on Thursday evening as a form of protest against the interruptions in electricity supply after a power sub-station exploded on 16th Avenue on Saturday.

The residents burnt tyres on the main road where taxis carrying passengers home from Pan Africa Mall and Alex Plaza to areas such as Far East Bank, East Bank Avenue and KwaBhekilanga.

Ward 116 councillor Adolph Marema said residents are tired of not having electricity.

“These people’s groceries are spoilt. They had to throw it away. This isn’t right,” Marema said.

He said City Power has fixed the sub-station, but it exploded again days later.

“I was with City Power workers last night [Wednesday] until the early hours of this morning [Thursday] trying to fix it.”

He said Eskom should not fix, but replace the sub-station because it wasn’t the first time this has happened.

Mathapelo Makwela, a resident, said this has caused an inconvenience to them because they had to spend money on things they had not budgeted for.

“Right now, we had to throw away most of our groceries because our fridges don’t work. We also had to spend money that we do not have to buy paraffin so that we can cook,” she said.

Makwela said most residents had to use primus stoves, which are not safe for their children.

This is a developing story. More details will follow.
