MC Weiler, Skeen on course to defend Discovery Cup
ALEXANDRA – MC Weiler girls and Skeen boys still on course to defend their championship in the Discovery Cup.
Both MC Weiler and Skeen primary schools girls and boys teams are still on course to defend their respective championship titles of the Discovery Cup in the Discovery Alex U12 Schools League.
In the girls’ section of the football championships, defending champions MC Weiler posted a second victory when they hammered five goals past a weak Ikage in the second week of the tournament at the Number 3 Square Grounds. Ikage managed to sneak in a consolation goal, making the scoreline 5–1.
In the first week of the tournament, MC Weiler girls made their intentions quite clear when they walloped Skeen 7–0.
Hot on their heels in the first week were Zenzeleni girls, who knocked six past Bovet with no reply but were beaten in the second week of the tournament by DH Carter 2–1.
Iphutheng, which won its game in the second week against Ithute 1–0 after drawing 1–1 with Dr Knak, is now the second-best team in the girls’ section of the tournament so far.
In the boys’ section, defending champions Skeen, who were awarded a walkover in the first week when Gordon failed to pitch up for the game, sailed past Ekukhanyisweni 2–0.
This puts them on course to defend the championship, although Zenzeleni is breathing on their neck after registering another win when they beat DH Carter 2–0. In the opening round, Zenzeleni posted the highest score in the boys’ section after demolishing Ithute 4–0. On goal aggregate, Zenzeleni is still ahead of the defending champions.
Depending on the outcome of the boys’ third round of the tournament on 27 September, Emfundisweni is also still on track to cause an upset, after winning their last two games against MC Weiler (1–0) and Bovet (1–0).
Dr Knak, which was among the favourites too, slumped to 1–0 defeat at the hands of Ikage. There could still be hope for Dr Knak depending on how they fare in the coming games before the finals on 8 November.
