Alex residents urged to join the Rev Buti walk

ALEXANDRA – Call for Alex resident to join the Rev Dr Sam Buti Fun Walk on 9 September.

The community of Alexandra has been urged to come out in their numbers to join the commemorative Rev Dr Sam Buti Fun Walk on 9 September.

The call came from the organisers of the walk which includes the Uniting Reformed Church of Southern Africa and its Sunday school, the Fat Cats Athletic Club and the Greater Alexandra Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Gacci).

The organisers called on the community to fill the streets of the historic township in celebration of the legacy of Buti. He was part of the Save Alexandra Campaign which fought the apartheid regime’s forced removals and won. Buti was later elected mayor of the township.

The organisers said there were a number of health benefits in joining the church’s congregation in the walk as an active lifestyle tended to ward-off lifestyle diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Besides the health benefits, there will be a number of entertainment events for friends and family on the day.

Mpho Motsumi, president of Gacci and owner of the Alex Mall, is expected to deliver a keynote address at the unveiling of a commemoration plaque for Buti, which is expected to be witnessed the activist’s wife, Mary, and other leading Alex dignitaries.

The 5km walk, which starts at 7am at the church at the corner of Rev Sam Buti Street and 5th Avenue, will culminate at the new Alex Mall in Tsutsumani Village.
