Siblings arrested after attack on policeman

ALEXANDRA – Siblings and friend on trial for police officer's assault.

Two Alex siblings and one of their friends will appear in the Alex Magistrates’ Court on 1 September after they allegedly assaulted a police officer.

The alleged assault took place on 30 July near a tavern at the intersection of Alfred Nzo Road and 17th Avenue.

The officer was rushed to hospital in a semi-unconscious state after the alleged assault. The three suspects were granted bail after they were detained for a few days in the Johannesburg Prison.

One of the suspects told Alex News that the officer, who was in civilian clothing, approached her and her friends while they were dancing to music from the tavern as they were walking home at about 5am. She claimed the officer allegedly hit her on the head with a beer bottle, inflicting some injuries. The alleged assault attracted the attention of some community members who came to her rescue and allegedly beat the officer until he collapsed.

In the process, the brother who was informed about the assault while he was at home came to assist them. He identified the officer after he found a police identity card in his pocket and then reported the incident at the Alexandra Police Station.

A police team rushed to the scene while emergency services took the injured officer to the hospital and the injured woman to a clinic. The woman was arrested after she received treatment at the clinic.
