Meet Eskom’s Business Investment Competition adjudicators

JOBURG – The Eskom Business Investment Competition is currently being adjudicated and the winner will be announced on 30 August.

A select group of SA’s top business leaders have been appointed to the panel of adjudicators for the annual Eskom Business Investment Competition (BIC).

The panellists are themselves accomplished entrepreneurs and business leaders who will grace the 2017 adjudication process currently underway and whose overall winner will be announced on 30 August.

In its 10th year, the competition has brought industry experts with a strong entrepreneurial track record on board to ask probing questions and offer insights derived from their own experience of this year’s entrants.

Joining the panel this year is Precious Tshabalala who, in her role as general manager at Shanduka Black Umbrellas, has deep experience in the successful mentoring and training of emerging black businesses.

Top SA entrepreneurs, Lebo Motshegoa and Xolani Meva will bring on board their experience in building a sustainable business and their hands-on understanding of the local market to the judging panel.

Also joining the panel this year is marketing maverick, Sylvester Chauke, who brings his years of experience as an innovator for brands such as Nandos, as well as his successful venture into entrepreneurship through his own company, DNA Brand Architects.

Returning to the panel are prominent economist, Xhanti Payi, and social entrepreneur, Simon Mtsuki. Industry leader, academic and researcher, Dr Langelihle Simela also rejoins the panel for the 2017 competition.

Former BIC finalists have also been included in this years’ judging panel, enabling them to mentor small businesses through the process. Co-owner of renewable energy company, Lamo Solar, Tshibvumo Sikhwivhilu will sit on the panel along with Siyabonga Sibiya, owner of Metal Products, and Jennifer Claasen, managing director of Ngaphaya Y2K10.

The BIC is aimed at black-owned, registered small and medium enterprises which have been in operation for at least 24 months in the engineering and construction; manufacturing; agriculture and agri-processing as well as the trade and services sectors.

Each sector winner, two runners-up from each category and the overall winner stand a chance to win their share of R1,3 million. Finalists will also exhibit their businesses at the Small Business Expo from 31 August to 2 September at the Ticketpro Dome in Northriding.

The Eskom Development Foundation is tasked with implementing Eskom’s CSI strategy in sectors including enterprise development, education, healthcare, social and community development.
