ALEXANDRA – Two hijackers of granny get still sentences.

Two Alex men were sentenced to a combined 35 years in prison by Alex Magistrates’ Court for aggravated robbery of a 70-year-old victim whom they hijacked. Their two accomplices are still at large.

Khuphulani Mabasa was sentenced to 15 years and Tshepo Ngwape was sentenced to 20 years by Magistrate Renier Boshoff for the incident which occurred in March last year in Tsutsumani as the victim was driving home.

She saw the accused in overalls who appeared to be road workers and stopped when they waved her down. One of them approached and ordered her to get out of the vehicle. As she struggled, the man threatened to break the driver’s side window.

Once she was out of the vehicle, three of the men got in and drove a short distance while the fourth remained wrestling with her for a ring which he took from her finger before running and getting into the vehicle. The victim left her handbag with her I.D, bank cards and R400 in cash in the vehicle.

The vehicle’s tracker system was activated and within an hour, police had traced the vehicle to a spot on 4th Avenue. They followed it until 11th Avenue where the car was stopped with three men inside. They were arrested after failing to account for its ownership and granted bail which one of them skipped.

The vehicle was returned to the victim.

Details: 10111.
