Hijacker shot in the act

ALEXANDRA – Police thwart hijacking at notorious hotspot.

A suspect’s alleged armed robbery attempt at a notorious hijack hotspot, backfired when he was shot and injured by a policeman.

The incident occurred at 4.20pm on 12 June at the intersection of Vincent Tshabalala Road and 13th Avenue.

Police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said the victim stopped his BMW at the traffic lights, behind two other vehicles when the suspect allegedly pointed a gun at him and ordered him to get out. As he complied, the suspect demanded a phone, which the victim threw on the passenger seat. When the suspect went for it, the victim ran behind his vehicle.

Suddenly, he heard a gunshot which forced him to flee further away but he was held back by someone who alerted him that the shot was discharged at the suspect by a police officer.

When the victim checked, the suspect was lying down in his own blood next to the victim’s vehicle. The officer handed the phone back to the victim and confiscated the suspect’s gun, which was sent for forensic testing. The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment under police guard.
