Taxi association donates handsomely to needy families

ALEXANDRA – Needy children receive a school uniform donation from local taxi association.

The plight of several struggling Alex families was eased recently by the Alexandra Taxi Association who donated full uniforms to their 46 children.

This was at an event themed, Lunch with the Kids for the children from eight schools, which included a meal with them and their parents at San Kopano Community Centre.

The township is home to many unemployed young and old families some in grandmother and child-headed households surviving on grants and piece jobs, which aren’t adequate for their daily upkeep. This results in children dropping out of school or struggling to cope without uniforms, particularly in winter. The recipients received shoes, trousers, tops and jerseys.

Flanked by association veterans and accompanied by its women’s league members, the association’s chairman, Vusi Mayaba said the donation was a gesture of goodwill to needy children whose families were part of the taxi industry’s clientele. “The industry relies on Alex residents who are our commuters regardless of social status,” he said, pleading to all local associations and businesses to plough back to the community through goodwill gestures he said were essential for the township’s development.

“Taxis, like football, are the only two components of the national economy in the hands of Africans whose children should be encouraged to sustain the future,” stressed veteran, Velile Thambe.

“Its (unity) is essential for our common good and the sustainability of the industry. The community should provide the industry with good, licensed drivers to maintain mutual credibility,” concluded Thambe.

Bad drivers who come from the community tarnish the industry’s name and endanger the safety of commuters. These drivers should be reported by calling 011 262 2333.

Another veteran, Nicholas Mphokeng said the association chose to donate to education to help improve the township’s future citizens. “We have adopted education to show we care for the children, our future and will monitor and track their performance to ensure they improve in their education. We look forward to a time when some of them become government ministers,” he said, urging teachers to ensure the beneficiaries get good results.

Mphokeng also pleaded with the beneficiaries to commit to their homework and pledged other support like books and nutritional support in the future. He further called for unity with tavern operators in building a better future for the children by not serving them alcohol and for residents to report to the police, those who provide children and the community at large, with drugs.
