Birds’ ‘Fabulous Gem’ comes face to face with former teammates of Soweto Fabulous Ladies

ALEXANDRA – Bluebirds hope they will collect maximum points when they meet crosstown rivals Soweto Fabulous Ladies in their Sasol Women League game.

Bluebirds’ fabulous gem which landed in their nest recently all the way from Soweto Fabulous Ladies will come face to face with her former teammates when the two sides collide in the Sasol Women’s League game on 6 May at the Alexandra Stadium.

Lerato ‘Fabulous Gem’ Williams (21) will face her former teammates for the very first time since leaving her former club for the Birds’ nest at the end of last year.

The pressure will be on Williams to perform against her old team with her nimble feet and dribbling wizardry which earned her the nickname ‘gem’ with the ‘fabulous’ coming from her ex team.

Birds coach Malvin Trynos Khumalo is buoyed by his team’s 4–1 win over North West University of the Vaal Ladies.

“We managed to redeem ourselves well in this game, especially coming back from our first loss of the season at the hands of Tuks Ladies at home,” he said. “I am delighted we collected the maximum points to keep us afloat and in contention for league honours, if not for a decent finish in this league for the very first time in our four-year journey.”

But the only ointment in Khumalo’s eye is that his girls were not scoring enough goals to keep up the pace with other teams, which he said was an area that needed attention. He said this included not conceding too many goals as well.

At their last outing against Vaal, strikers Nyatama Mnguni, Tshwarelo Digaota, Ntsoaki Phala and Morongwa Manamela all registered their names on the score sheet, and Khumalo is hoping they can do the same in the Fabulous game.

But the good news is that stylish midfielder Noxolo ‘Zongo’ Gcina is back from injury and is currently sweating for her fitness. Khumalo believes her return will be a welcome boost for the team as it will provide him with depth when selecting his line-up.

The other good news for Khumalo is the final registration of keeper Tshidi Victoria Muroa who was signed from Limpopo side, Kanatla Ladies.

“I am delighted that I am finally spoilt for choice as I now have a team that has a wide depth of players to work with,” said Khumalo, adding that he was hopeful this season will be the best ever for his girls.
