Fruit and veg traders think they know who vandalised graveyard

Operators of a fruit and vegetable stall next to the main entrance of the Vosloorus Cemetery have told Kathorus MAIL about a man who is allegedly responsible for vandalising several graves at the cemetery a fortnight ago.

According to the stall operators, they described the grave wrecker as a man in his late 20s but not over 30, who they claim is responsible for the destruction of about 2 000 graves on September 3.

The cost of the destruction has been estimated at just over R3 000 by the municipality.

A resident who took Kathorus MAIL to the man’s hide-out under shrubs inside the graveyard described the culprit as suffering from a mental problem.

“He is someone well known around this community,” said David Mahlangu.

Employees at the fruit stand confirmed the man seemed to have a mental problem.

“When the municipality employees came around asking if we had seen the person or people responsible for the vandalised tombstones inside the cemetery, we told them about the man, but we didn’t know what they did with the information we gave them,” said one of the employees.

Kathorus MAIL found what looked like the man’s hide-out under shrubs, but despite waiting almost an hour for him to appear, we could not locate him.

Blankets on the floor, a small bottle of water, a shopping plastic bag with a black garbage bag inside were the only items found by Kathorus MAIL at what local’s claim is the lone grave-wreckers hide out.
