A trip to Japan

“We visited a bonsai farm, saw the most magnificent chrysanthemums and cherry blossom trees as well as walking through forests where we spotted indigenous hydrangeas,” said Hilton.

MARCH’s guest speaker at the Johannesburg South Garden Club, Hilton Blake, spoke to the members about his recent holiday trip to Japan and showed slides of the countryside, featuring many beautiful gardens, national parks, shrines and temples he saw on his travels.

“Tokyo, the capital, is known for its skyscrapers and shopping and it’s quite something to see. Our small group used the bullet train to get from place to place, and we were astonished how spectacularly clean it was. In fact, Japan is one of the cleanest countries I’ve visited.

“We visited a bonsai farm, saw the most magnificent chrysanthemums and cherry blossom trees as well as walking through forests where we spotted indigenous hydrangeas,’ said Hilton.

A visit to an open air art gallery was one of the highlights of Hilton’s holiday, where permanent artworks of Picasso are displayed and he added, “No trip to Japan would be complete without going to a tea house.”

The garden club members enjoyed Hilton’s talk and photo slides, a few commenting on how they would like to visit Japan one day to see for themselves the magnificent scenery.
