THE inspiration to design an app to help lost and abandoned animals all started when the doorbell was answered on a spring day towards the end of 2016.

A puppy of not more than four weeks was abandoned in the veld around the corner and had been rescued and brought in by a good Samaritan. The puppy was taken in for safekeeping and a photo of her was posted on community platforms but no one seemed to have lost this puppy. The puppy was taken to the local vet for medical checks and thereafter he made the decision to give baby Jade a loving home among his other two lovely dogs as he simple could not part with her.

That is the moment which inspired this project to develop an app for the community to help find lost pets and animals in distress. With the free mobile app, users in the community can help reunite these animals with their human family.

The brains behind this great free mobile app are southerners based in Bassonia and Southdale. They are Logan Hing, Eric Luk and Tim Hing.

The 'Oh Whizkers' smartphone app is for the community to help the furry friends in need:

• For the pet owner, just send an alert in real-time that will notify all users within a 20km radius in the event that your pet is missing.

• If a user in the community thinks they’ve spotted a lost pet, snap and send a notification that immediately reaches all users in the area and includes a geo-tag of where the animal was spotted.

After demonstrating the functionality to shelters and animal rescue centres, people said they see huge benefits of this app to help their cause and work, but they also realise that for the app to be effective, they need people to use the app and contribute to the creation of a caring pet-friendly community.

It is only with the input of the community that the app will work most effectively; the more people download and use the app, the higher the chance of your pet being found and the greater the possibility of rescuing animals abandoned on the side of the road or other places. Be a part of the community that cares and saves animals in distress.
