Popular Joburg Open is back

Joburg Open will be presented by the City of Johannesburg

The City of Johannesburg will play host to the popular Joburg Open where some of South Africa’s top golfers and the front runners on the European Tour will do battle for the coveted trophy and prize money.

The eleventh edition of the Joburg Open will take place from Thursday, February 23, to Sunday, February 26, at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club. Play will commence on the East and West courses and are in impeccable conditions after the widespread rainfall over the past few weeks and since Monday, February 20.

The Joburg Open boasts the biggest field of 210 players that includes both professional and amateur players.

The R16.5 million tournament will see 2016 winner Haydon Porteous, former Masters champion, Trevor Immelman, 2009 US PGA Championship winner YE Yang, 2016 European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke as well as Brandon Stone, George Coetzee and Jaco van Zyl return to the local fairways in Johannesburg.

Twenty-one-year-old Johannesburg golfer Porteous became R2.6-million richer last year and will be back to defend his title.

Unfortunately, the ever popular Pro-Am tournament on Tuesday, February 21, had to be cancelled due to bad weather conditions which prevailed throughout the day and would have had an effect on the two courses. Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Clr Herman Mashaba announced that the tournament will take place on another day where the fourball included one of the professional players together with three players.

Spectators can catch the golf action on the course from the front line by attending any or all of the days of play. Tickets are on sale at the gate of the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club or through TicketPros https://www.ticketpros.co.za/portal/web/index.php.
