This classic lasagna recipe perfectly marries the traditional Italian meat sauce with layers of satisfying cheese and pasta is perfect for a hungry family. Pair it with a fresh garden salad for an easy Friday evening crowd-pleaser.
Quinton Mostert, store manager at Food Lover’s Market at Mall @ Newmarket shares his favourite simple summer lasagne recipe.
Ingredients
30ml, oil
1 large finely chopped onion
500 g beef, fined chopped
110 g tomato paste
1 can, whole chopped tomatoes
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
250 g lasagne sheets
grated cheese to sprinkle
For the Cheese Sauce
60 ml margarine
60 ml flour
625 ml milk
¼ teaspoon grated nutmeg
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 egg
Method
Heat the oil in a frying pan and add the onion, braise onion until golden brown for three minutes. Add finely chopped beef, until the meat is brown, ensure the meat is cooked for about 15 minutes. Place the meat, pasta and cheese sauce in alternate layers in a greased baking dish – repeat the layers until all the ingredients are used up. Once ingredients are all used seal the dish with a layer of cheese sauce. Sprinkle the grated cheese on top and bake for 40 minutes in a hot oven of (200°C) or until pasta is cooked through. For the cheese sauce, melt margarine and stir in the flour, gradually add milk and stir until sauce thickens and the texture is not lumpy. Add nutmeg, cheese and season as desired allow the contents to cool slightly.
