A TALENTED young man from Alberton is making waves in the world of karate.

Zavier van der Merwe recently became the youngest karateka in Shin-Gi-Tai Karate Academy history to obtain a second dan black belt.

The 15-year-old’s achievements in karate are remarkable and he has received gold medals at South African Championships, Southern Gauteng Colours, a silver medal at the WKC (World Karate Confederation) World Championship in Italy in 2011, as well as silver and bronze medals in 2015 at the Funakoshi World Championships in Randburg.

According to the chief instructor of Shin-Gi-Tai Karate Academy, sensei Llewellyn Oosthuizen, Zavier is the most versatile student he has ever had.

The young star’s personal achievements also include being deputy head boy at Laerskool Orion where he received an award for the most versatile achiever from Grade Five to Seven. He also was the top sportsman and cultural achiever awards in Grade Six and Seven. In addition to this, Zavier was Dux student for academics in primary school, where he never had an average below 90 per cent.

In 2015 he was announced as the most versatile Grade Eight student at Helpmekaar College. He also possesses provincial colours in cricket, chess and rugby.This very talented, disciplined and accomplished young man seems to be going places and is one to look out for in the future. Watch this space.
