Keep mosquitoes out of your house

Mosquitoes can be a nuisance during the summer months. Here are some natural ways to keep them away.

MOSQUITOES are a common annoyance for many South Africans during the summer months. The female mosquito feeds on the blood of different animal hosts.

While the blood the mosquito takes is usually negligible, the saliva of the mosquito frequently causes inflammation and irritation to the host.

Keeping mosquitoes out of the home can be difficult but there are natural ways to make your home less attractive to the insects.

Creating physical barriers with window screens can prevent mosquitoes from getting into your home.

Mosquito nets around your bed can also prevent contact and help avoid bites.

Several kinds of natural oils have been found to be natural mosquito repellents.

The scent of lavender is said to deter them as well as eucalyptus mixed with lemon oil, mint and tea-tree oil are also said to repel mosquitoes.

These natural oils can be applied to exposed skin to hold off the insects or sprayed with a vaporiser into your room.

Lighting camphor in a room with closed windows and door for 15-20 minutes is also said to be an effective way to rid the room of mosquitoes.

Even with physical and natural repellents; it is difficult to avoid being bitten completely. Treating the symptoms of mosquito bites focus on reducing the inflammation and soothing the itch.

Some natural anti-inflammatory treatments are: putting chilled aloe vera cream on the bite; dabbing the bite with a cold, damp, green tea bag or with witch hazel to ease the inflammation.

If you have been bitten by a mosquito and display symptoms of an allergic reaction; seek medical assistance as soon as possible.
