Create a unique look with tiles

Home trends evolve time and time again, and with a wide choice of tiles available for walls and floors, it can be difficult to decide which option will suit your home and lifestyle.

Bright or gentle, shiny or matte, textured or smooth, these are some of the options from which one needs to choose.

Inkjet printed tiles are the latest trend, imitating weathered wood, layered concrete and classic marble.

“New inkjet tile designs are addressing the earth-inspired theme, but also speak to the trend of combining neutral palettes, such as wood, concrete and marble with luxurious finishes. These tiles are a great option for the entire home, from bathrooms to the patio,” said Richard Nuss from Johnson Tiles.

Whether they want to beautify their bathrooms or renovate their patios, Nuss shares some handy tips to guide home owners who are considering upgrading their spaces with tiles, including inkjet tiles.

Mix and match

If you are struggling to choose between several looks, consider combining them. Create interest by mixing different tiles.

“The colours used to create this effect can be the same or different, the only important aspect to consider when combining different tiles is that they need to complement each other,” said Nuss.

The safest option is to mix similar shades that blend together beautifully for a harmonious look.

Combine a tile with an Encaustic pattern, that reminds of times gone by, with a neutral wood-look tile.

“This combination works especially well in the bathroom, where soft tones take the lead; the mixing of the two tiles creates a very unique look that results in a tranquil atmosphere,” he said.

A way to create interest on your walls is by mixing and matching different sized tiles throughout your space. Mixing tile sizes in the bathroom steers it away from a uniform look.

Black and white

Bring the unique geometry of patterned floors into your home by using black and white tiles or light and dark tiles. For your walls, go for a blanket look by creating a plain white or plain black wall to produce a clean and cohesive effect.

A mixture of black and white tiles as flooring, also known as a checkerboard, is timeless and can be laid using contemporary or traditional patterns.

“Interiors in black and white go beyond seasonal trends, and a room with this décor style can easily be updated with décor accessories and colours that are current,” said Nuss.

Wood and nature

Incorporating organic textures and patterns from nature into your space can bring dimension to your décor and create a neutral, warm look.

Inkjet tiles with a wood design can now go where wood hasn’t gone before, in wet spaces. These wood-look tiles are ideal for the bathroom and work just as well as decking on the patio, especially those with a textured finish.

“The latest prints imitate weathered and scuffed wood, and once these tiles are laid, it is very difficult to tell whether you’re walking over solid wood floors or tiles,” said Nuss.
