SA chefs trending at the Rand Show

Chefs cooking up a storm: Rand Show serves up mouth-watering entertainment with the SA Chefs Theatre

Cooking has never been so trendy, with seemingly everyone these days – even kids – wanting to grab their wooden spoons and get in on the culinary action. If you want to take part in the gourmet action this Easter, the Rand Show is the place to be, as the SA Chefs Association, in association with Checkers, whips up a masterpiece of gastronomic theatre.

The SA Chefs Association (SACA) and Checkers present the SA Chefs Theatre over the Easter long weekend (April 3 – 6) and the closing weekend (April 10 – 12) of the Rand Show.

Each hour on the hour, from 10:00 to 16:00, SACA’s chefs and celebrity guests will present a smorgasbord of food and drink demonstrations. Each time slot combines a themed presentation and a practical demonstration, with the opportunity to sample each chef’s creations.

Here’s just a taste of what’s on the SA Chefs’ Rand Show menu this year. Chef Madumo Monageng of the HTA School of Culinary Art will present on the hot topic of Banting, as he demonstrates his delicious take on carb-free eating.

South Africa’s undisputed cake boss Paul Viera has kiddies’ birthday cakes on his mind this year. He’ll be showing Rand Show visitors how to create a three-tiered Winnie the Pooh birthday cake, and how to make 2D and 3D decorations to enchant those birthday boys and girls obsessed by the animated movie phenomenon Frozen.

There’ll be presentations on potatoes and rice, teaching home cooks which variety is best for what dish, with demonstrations on tasty new ways to prepare these staple starches.

Also on the food stage: how to create fine dining with local and everyday products; demonstrations on food and fruit carving; chocolate demonstrations; and presentations covering everything you need to know about coffee.

There will be daily lucky draws of cookbooks and other foodie delights.

It’s a full line-up of mouth-watering treats at the SA Chefs Theatre, ensuring that the Rand Show not only lives up to its promise of being a great day out, but also a delicious day out.
