ALBERTON- What do you get when you have a competition to win tickets to see the biggest boy band in the world live in concert? One School, One Dream, One Direction!

5FM ran a contest to find the school with the most One Direction fever. Alberton High quickly got on board after Demi Billis, a learner, approached the school to ask permission for the school to participate. Mr Oscar von Platen, a teacher, immediately joined in the fun and helped run the project.

The initial entry to the competition saw the entire school sing their own rendition of Kiss You during assembly along with streamers, banners, cheerleaders and even the school’s very own One Direction band!

Once the video had been uploaded to Youtube, views escalated to more than 4 000 over the weekend. The following Monday it was announced that Alberton High made it into the top five schools countrywide. A public round of voting placed the school in the top three.

Rob Forbes and Fix from 5FM, who hosted the competition, interviewed Mr von Platen on air a number of times to issue challenges as well as to chat about how the contest was developing. Spirit in the school was building every day and One Direction mania officially hit Alberton High! The school participated in three challenges in the finals, which included the most outstanding chalkboard artwork drawn by the learners in the school, a Twitter race, in which they reached over 530 retweets and a quiz.

Alberton High was placed third overall and won 20 tickets to the concert in Johannesburg. The camaraderie between the staff and learners at Alberton High made this dream a reality.

A huge thanks to 5FM for giving Alberton High the opportunity to participate as well as to every single learner, parent and teacher who voted, liked and retweeted! #LIVELOUDFOR1D
