ALBERTON – Many eye problems can be asymptomatic, so make sure they go for an annual eye examination at an optometrist near you. Some symptoms that may present are:
· Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
· Short attention span
· Avoiding reading and other close activities
· Frequent headaches
· Covering one eye and more
The first eye test should be done on your child at a young age. We want to examine if the child has normal vision for their age and also look at binocularity and ocular health. The eye test entails a comprehensive adult eye test and should include, but is not limited to, the following tests:
· Patient history
· Visual acuity
· Preliminary tests
· Keratometry
· Refraction
· Eye movements
Your optometrist should be able to brief you on all the tests and phases of testing and answer questions such as: Do children have a choice to wear either contacts or spectacles? How can you as a parent help your child protect his/her eyes? How can you improve your child’s hand-eye coordination?
