Petrolheads receive their certificates

“It does not look like much, but it is one of the few things on earth than cannot be bought,” Schoeman said.

ALBERTON – Three months after bettering one of the most dangerous Guinness World Records, the two South African holders received their official certificates this week.

Enrico Schoeman from the East Rand and André de Kock from Alberton, set a new distance record for riding a motorcycle through a fire tunnel at 120,4 metres in Parys in the Free State on September 5 this year.

The record ride, achieved on an Australian motorcycle and sidecar outfit, was a highlight of this year’s Rhino Motorcycle Rally in the town.

After the effort, the pairing sent both visual and documented proof of the ride to the Guinness World Record offices in London, Brittain.

The Guinness judges ratified the attempt within two weeks, but then started a marathon quest, by posting the two official certificates to South Africa.

“The documents disappeared into the black hole that ate all local post during the postal strike,” said Enrico Schoeman this week. “We explained to them that things do not work in government departments over here, and they sent the certificates by courier, but managed to get the names wrong.”

After that had been rectified, the correct two certificates arrived by courier this week.

“It does not look like much, but it is one of the few things on earth than cannot be bought,” Schoeman said.

The pair is currently planning another stunt, said to involve the utter destruction of two caravans, a car and a motorcycle.
