Stand up against violence and abuse and eradicate the silent killer

Speak up and break the silence on behalf of those trapped and too scared to come forward.

As we enter Sixteen Days of Activism as a call to stop all forms violence and abuse against women and children, we would like to call on our community to take these 16 days, and each and every day thereafter to actively fight against this in breaking the silence.

Our community suffers from broken souls and spirits, women, children and yes, even men falling victim to those who abuse, rape, maim, assault … leaving behind the innocent ones whose lives have changed forever, whose souls where ripped apart and whose spirits die a little more with every violent act against them.

We call upon each and every member in our community to break the silence and stop the silent killer – report acts of violence and abuse. We urge parents, children, teachers, neighbours – anyone who is aware or suspicious of violent and abusive acts against an innocent, to speak up and break the silence on behalf of those trapped and too scared to come forward.

Let us be proactive and report these acts. In our country a woman is raped every 60 seconds, we have some of the highest incidences of child and infant rape in the world – and in coming forward and breaking the silence, let us not forget that men can be abused, raped, maimed and assaulted too.

With this, we invite our community to join us in the RECORD’s Walk Against Crime on Saturday, December 6. Come and pledge your support to our men and women in blue, trauma centres and security companies – all those who fight crime and all those who step in to heal the wounds of the victims.

We depart at 09:00 from the Alberton (A-Square- Forklift) Rugby Club and will walk to the Alberton Police Station, hand over our pledge of support and then walk back to the club.

PLEASE REMEMBER to register to walk with us: SMS WALK and your full name to 36396. Please note that R1.50 will be charged per SMS and that Ts and Cs apply. For more information, drop us an email at united@caxton.co.za or turn to the entertainment section of the paper.

**SAVE THE DATE: The same walk is scheduled for the South of Johannesburg, spearheaded by the Comaro CHRONICLE and the Southern COURIER on Saturday January 24, 2015.
