As crime is a constant concern for the public at large, readers should take note of the following safety tips.

Morning running safety

* Stick to safe areas, suburbs and streets.

* It is dangerous to run through an industrial area or an empty, secluded area.

* Keep to residential streets as much as possible so that if something were to happen, you are able to call for help.

* It is also a good idea to have your cellphone on you and to notify your family where you are planning to run, so that they will be on standby should you need them.

* Try to organise your run with a group of friends.

* Do not run with an MP3 player as the more distracted you are the less you are aware of your surroundings and it is essential that you are alert at all times.

Hijacking

* Remain calm.

* Do not make any sudden moves. The robber may be as scared as you are. Any sudden movement may scare him and as a result he may fire a shot or react violently.

* Cooperate. Your life is more important than your vehicle.

* If you are particularly concerned about being a potential hijacking victim, it is vital to obtain information on the subject. Looking at case studies is one way of familiarising yourself with the modus operandi of hijackers.

* Strategic information can be obtained from your local SAPS. You can also contact the SAPS to enquire about any anti-hijacking courses being offered in your community.

* Being aware of what you are up against will empower you against a possible attack.

* The hijacking industry is a complex one, but you can learn a lot from case studies and general courses. However, awareness of the basic prevention principles is imperative.

Smash and grab incidents

The SAPS does not have the manpower to monitor every traffic light, intersection or stop street.

* Do not to put any valuables on your passenger seat where they will be visible.

* Be aware of your surroundings.

* Do not talk on your cellular phone while stopped at a traffic light.

Home protection

This involves the area you reside in.

* Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If there is something happening which is cause for suspicion, alert your local SAPS about your concerns.

* Looking at your home security, there are a few things you can do to make it more difficult for intruders. High walls, electric gates and fences, dogs, burglar bars, security doors and outside security lights make it difficult for prospective burglars and robbers to gain entry into your home or property.

* Armed response – your aim when ensuring your family’s safety is to get as much help as quickly as possible. It is worth your while to invest in an armed response company that is most visible in your neighbourhood, and to ensure that a panic button system is installed in your home.

* Your neighbours – this is one of the most important factors of home protection. Get to know your neighbours. Make a point of discussing issues concerning your safety at your homes. There are many ways to notify your neighbours should you have a problem at home, for example, using your cellphone, two-way radios and intercoms. These methods of communication will ensure you get help as soon as possible.
