Just as you take the necessary precautions in order to feel secure in your home; it is also important to protect yourself when driving your car. Here are a few motoring safety tips to keep in mind when driving:

* Any plants, trees, shrubs or bushy undergrowth outside your house should be kept to a minimum. These areas can be used as a hiding place for criminals.

* Be aware of all movement in your street when leaving and returning home from work.

* Take note of strangers walking by or any unfamiliar vehicles parked or driving slowly near your property.

* If you see something suspicious, drive past, do not stop at your gate, and contact your local security company or the SAPS.

* When driving, place all your valuables under your seats, so they are not visible to people walking by.

* Stay alert at intersections for any suspicious people or activities.

* Always stop at right angles to your driveway, allowing for a quick getaway if necessary.

* If possible, have someone open your gates for you, particularly if you do not have an electric gate.

* Consider fitting a long distance receiver to your gate’s remote control. This will allow for the gate to be open before you arrive.

* Be aware of being followed from an off-ramp or shopping complex and if you’re feeling unsure, drive to a busy area or to the nearest police station.

* Make a concerted effort to park your car behind locked gates.
