Alberton Comrades highlights

Congratulations to the Comrades class of 2014, with a sterling performances!

ALBERTON – Out of the 15 500 runners who started the 89th Comrades Marathon, out of 17 206 qualifiers, there were 35 Alberton finishers. A total of 27 Alberton men and eight women, including four novices, finished this gruelling 90 km down run from Pietermartizburg to Durban in the gold and royal blue colours of Alberton Athletics Club.

The Alberton Athletics Club proud medal winners and category winners were:

Silver (sub 7:30): Glyn Rynhoud 6:48:37 (first veteran), Donald Kgopa (first senior) and Michael Brandon -Kirby third in 7:29:17.

Bill Rowan medals (sub 9:00): Robert Spear 7:55:34, Niel Cillie 8:28:15, Marius Carstens 8:41:54 (first master), Cobus van Niekerk 8:50:37 (first novice) and Johan van Tonder 8:56:00.

Bronze medals (sub 10 hours):

Tony Mendes 9:04:29, Tania Blignaut 9:28:04 (first woman), Gavin Pansegrouw 9:43:55 and Helena Broadfoot 9:50:59 (first women’s novice)

Bronze medals (sub 11 hours): Rian Naudé 10:01:12, Paulus Jacobs 10:05:07, Shane Van Dam 10:05:07, Andre Coetzer, Lisa Mavric, Barbara Luckemeyer, Andries Venter 10:29:16 (for his 30th Comrades medal), Ian Kingon, Judy van Dyk, Jorg Luckemeyer, James Barr, Alan Bezuidnehout and Phillip Webster.

Vic Clapham medals (between 11 and 12 hours):

Kirsten van Goidsenhoven 11:08:49 (first Vic Clapham medal winner), Charlotte Burger, Ettienne van Wyk, Johan van Schalkwyk, Koos Coetzee 11:37:23 (first grandmaster over 60), Neelesh Morar, Alida Sequeira, Frans Nxumalo, Paresh Chagan and Humberto Texeira 11:55:13 (last finished for his 10th finishing medal).
