Breakfast run with a purpose

Bikers got together raising much needed funds so that they Stepping Stones Hospice can continue the work they do.

ALBERTON – The roaring of 40 motorcycle engines on Sunday morning through the quiet suburb of Meyersdal, signalled the start of the inaugural Vic’s Vaal Bike Dash in aid of Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services.

Brothers Jared Sadie (17) and Jon Daniel Sadie (15) from Alberante wanted to honour their mom’s legacy with the organising of this breakfast run, a route that started in Meyersdal and ended at Stonehaven in Vanderbijlpark on the Vaal River.

Vicky Bruce passed away early last year at the age of 38, after years of suffering from Osteogenesis Imperfecta. In her last months of life, Vicky was cared for by hospice, and her dying wish was that other sufferers must be able to experience the kindness and dedication of a hospice care service.

This wish led to her mom, Tersia Burger, and a group of determined Alberton ladies, establishing Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services in New Market Park, Alberton, the first of this kind of service in the greater Alberton area.

The bikers completed the 90 km route through the beautiful areas of Eikenhof, Walkerville through De Deur all the way to the 4-star Stonehaven Lodge on the Vaal River in Vanderbijlpark. ThinkBike supported the Run and send 15 marshalls to assist bikers on the route.

“My mom felt very strong about hospice, and this is our way of creating awareness for this organisation, raising much needed funds so that they can continue the work they do, and simply for us to honour her memory,” says Jared.
