Sewage and condoms on streets in Dewittrus

The sewage in Dewittrus exposed to children in the area

ON March 10, a resident of Dewittrus, Alberton said that the sewage flowing from Doreen Street came down towards Andries Street, which started on March 9 and continued on March 10 and 11.

“None of us were aware, we thought it was rain water. The children were playing in the ‘water’ and then we had to go and bath the kids in Dettol,” said Jimmy Cronje.

“If my kids get sick, the EMM will have major problems to deal with, because the EMM have been notified about this matter since 2011. Though we knew about this, we have reported it and still nothing has been done,” said Jimmy.

All the condoms and human faeces were lying exposed to the children in the area. “Would you like your children to be exposed to these conditions?” asked Tina Cronje.

The EMM responded that, “No complaints have been received for any blockages in that area since January 6 on the official complaint system. The sewer was blocked in Doreen Street and opened by our team. This was reported through the media unit,” said an EMM representative.

“It needs to be noted that the media should not be the complaint system for the council. The 24 hour call centre number is 086 054 3000 for Ekurhuleni services complaints and any water or sewer complaints for the Alberton service delivery area can be forwarded during office hours to 011 999 2647/51/46,” was the response from the Ekurhuleni Municipality.
