Movie with big stars filmed in Alberton

Writer and director of films such as the Oscar-nominated District 9 and recently Elysium, Neill Blomkamp shoots his latest film in Alberton.

ALBERTON – On January 20, opposite Alberton City mall in the open veld, a production team were preparing to shoot the remainder of the film Chappie, which is said to be released in 2015.

“After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot,” the moviewebsite IMBD reports.

The film is directed by Neill Blomkamp, who also wrote and directed films such as the Oscar-nominated District 9 and recently Elysium. Chappie is a science fiction movie that will include actors Brandon Auret, who also had a part in Elysium. Sharlto Copley, Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Dev Patel are in the cast of Chappie.

The entire film has been shot in and around Johannesburg, according to a communication representative.
