Mackenzie Nicholls becomes an equestrian sensation

Brackendowns' young horse rider is making a name for herself as she continues to excel in her sport.

Mackenzie Nicholls, a 9-year-old home-schooled equestrian sensation from Brackendowns, is taking the competitive world by storm.

Following her impressive performances at the national championships at KEP from September 24 to 28 and the Gauteng finals at Eaton Farms in August, Mackenzie’s dedication to her craft is evident.

This talented young rider has proven anything is possible with hard work, dedication, and passion.


Mackenzie was recently awarded a trophy for the top primary school rider for Sedibeng in 2024.

Mackenzie’s equestrian journey began at the age of two, with pony rides at the Bambi Stables.

Four years later, she is a force to be reckoned with, representing Sedibeng at the SANESA finals in July and qualifying for nationals in six disciplines.

Alongside her trusted horse, Kristy, Mackenzie secured a second-place finish at nationals in their jumping class.

Mackenzie’s achievements continue to mount. She recently received the trophy for top primary school rider for Sedibeng in 2024 and was awarded regional colours in eight different equestrian disciplines, as well as Gauteng equestrian colours for the core league.

Mackenzie’s talents extend beyond equestrian. She participated in the Essence of Dance Eisteddfod from September 20 to 28, performing in 11 dances and achieving outstanding results.

Mackenzie figure skates for Central Gauteng, having started before she could hardly walk under the guidance of her mother and coach, Taryn Nicholls.

Mackenzie’s daily routine is a testament to her unwavering commitment.

She completes her Grade Three schooling in the mornings, followed by three hours of riding at the stables. Her afternoons are filled with dancing and evenings with figure skating.

With her sights set on future competitions, Mackenzie shares her goals: “I want to be the best junior rider in Gauteng both in showing and jumping.

“I am excited about our second-place rosette at nationals, and also the special award we won this year. Kristy and I tried our best all year long,” she added.

Mackenzie’s family acknowledges the vital role played by her teachers, coaches, grooms, supporters, friends, and everyone involved in her journey.

“We are extremely grateful for the people who inspire her to follow her dreams,” said Nicholls.

As Mackenzie continues to soar, her passion and perseverance inspire others. With her sights set on future competitions, this talented young rider is sure to make waves in the equestrian world and beyond.
