Hoërskool Marais Viljoen has a cricketing rising star

Van Wyk is fresh from the SAW U19 inbound tour against Namibia held from July 1 to 8.

Ashleigh van Wyk (16), a learner at Hoërskool Marais Viljoen in Alberton, is on a path to cricketing success.

Van Wyk is fresh from the South Africa Women’s (SAW) U19 inbound tour to Namibia.

Against Namibia, Van Wyk took 1/13 in four overs, and 2/7 (including a wicket maiden over) against Eastern Storm.

Commenting on her games against Namibia, Van Wyk said: “The highlight was taking my first international wicket and it was a big wicket for the team!

“This was an exciting experience, getting to run out in the new green and gold kit was such a privilege.”

She attributes her performance to her experienced coaching team.

“I am constantly learning new game plans and how to improve on what I have been working on with my current coaches to learn from one of the most respected women’s coaches in the country,” she said.

“Coach Dinesha Devnarain has such vast cricket knowledge and experience and she is willing to pass on the knowledge,” added Van Wyk.

To keep fit, Van Wyk also does cross country as the running fits in with her fitness training that she has to do.

The Grade 10 pupil says she has her sights on making the final selected 15 for the 2025 U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled for January in Malaysia and Thailand.
