Local bowler achieves impressive score in Gauteng Open

Accomplished sportsman Gavin Kilpatrick recently took part in the Gauteng Open and secured perfect scores.

Morningside Country Club Bowls hosted the visually impaired and disabled open bowling for the singles format on June 29 and 30.

Paralympic bronze medalist and Brackenhurst Bowling Club’s Gavin Kilpatrick competed in the singles and played it in a round-robin style tournament.

The event schedule was initially two pools of four players and the highest-ranked players from each pool to proceed to the finals. Unfortunately, two players from Gauteng North had to withdraw which changed the format.

“Officially, the impaired section had visually impaired bowlers who were from the B1, B2 and B3 categories. We all had to play one match against each other. The winner had to be chosen based on the number of wins and shots scored during the round-robin tournament,” explained Kilpatrick.

Because of time constraints, they could not play all the matches this past weekend and the last games to decide on the medals. They will continue on July 28 at the Morningside Country Club bowls.

On June 29, Kilpatrick played against Linsey Engelbrecht and Nicholas Dedekant, but unfortunately lost both games.

“On June 30, I played against Ernest Watkins and Marize Jurgens and won both games. This win puts me back in the medal hunt for July 28,” he said.
