Local bowlers finish strong in tourney

Brackenhurst Bowling Club’s Gavin Kilpatrick is looking forward to competing in the Gauteng Open on June 28 and 29, following his recent tournament.

Bowling clubs gathered for the Ekurhuleni Bowls (EKB) mixed pairs tourney at the Northmead Bowling Club on June 15.

Brackenhurst Bowling Club’s Gavin Kilpatrick was among competitors who took part in the EKB.

He was joined by coach Kelvin Bain and other teammates where they played three games.

“In the first game we lost very narrowly by two points and we couldn’t keep up. In the second game we had a real journey, it was about 23-8 and we struggled to pick up points because the team we played against was very strong. And in the last game we managed to beat the other team and they had three district players on their side,” explained Kilpatrick.

As much as bowls is a very technical sport, Kilpatrick said one needs to stay focused because, “It’s a mentally challenging game.”

“We are now working towards the Gauteng Open which will take place on June 28 and 29, and I’m looking forward to that because there’ll be a visually impaired section there. Hopefully I can put more bowls in training in the next few weeks and get good results there,” he said.
