Santos sisters show their skills in aerial sport
Nakita and Giselle, clinched first place in aerial hoop as a duet (doubles), breaking the South African record.
For the Santos sisters, Nakita (16) and Giselle (14), the journey in aerial sport began just before the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown hit South Africa.
Their mother, Lucy Santos, recalled how she got her two daughters into aerial.
“I have a friend who does aerial, and I asked her if she could teach the girls. It was just before lockdown, and we thought it would be something just for fun. We entered them into their first competition at the Arnold Classics, and they did really well,” said Lucy while beaming with pride. The sisters have been doing great ever since.
This year’s South African Pole Sports Federation (SAPSF) competition saw Nakita come first for aerial hoop. At the same competition, Nakita and Giselle, clinched first place in aerial hoop as a duet (doubles), breaking the South African record. The Cirk professional training programme boasts with Nakita as one of their members, the youngest in the team.
Asked what their goals are in aerial, their father Carlos jokingly interjected, “I also want to hear this,” waiting for a response from the sisters.
“I would like to see myself performing in big circuses around the world”, said Nakita confidently, while a shy Giselle nodded in agreement and smiled. During her debut international competition, Nakita brought South Africa a silver medal from the Pole Sports Federation’s World Championships in Kielce, Poland.
The Santos family live a happy life in Randhart. When the Santos sisters are not doing hoops and other sporty activities, they are laughing and joking, or hanging out with friends at Grace Trinity.
