Chad Markgraaf’s 100 Marathons in 100 Days Journey to Fight Cancer

20-year-old from Alberton makes a difference by running to raise money for cancer patients who are struggling financially because of their medical costs.

Chad Markgraaf (20) of Alberton embarked on an inspiring journey to run 100 marathons in 100 days.

The second-year BAccSci student at Wits University said he started this incredible feat on July 1 and plans to continue until October 8, running a 42km marathon every day.

The Alberton Record caught up with Chad on July 25 as he completed the 25th day of his 100-day journey. Should he complete his 100-day challenge, Chad would have run 4 200km in 100 consecutive days.

He aims to raise funds for those suffering from cancer, specifically helping individuals facing financial hardships due to medical expenses.

A form of expression

For Chad, running is more than a hobby. It is a form of expression of his determination to make a difference.

The previous year was difficult for Chad’s family and himself, as they faced unexpected challenges that tested their strength and resilience, causing him to fail one of his degree modules towards the end of last year.

He is currently redoing the module, and as a result, Chad realised 2023 would be a year filled with plenty of free time. He knew he wanted to make the most of this time by making a difference.

While on one of his long runs in January, the idea of running 100 marathons in 100 days came to Chad. Since then, it has been somewhat of an obsession for him.

In September last year, his mom courageously fought and overcame a silent battle with skin cancer, and through this, he was able to experience first-hand the many harsh realities that cancer brings.

“The battle was further worsened by the lack of necessary funding to combat the disease. It was not an easy time for myself and my family. However, running was a companion through it all,” said Chad.

100 marathons in 100 days to make a difference

Chad’s heart was stirred and he knew he had to do something to help others going through a similar ordeal. Fuelled by compassion and driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact, Chad dedicated every set of 100 marathons to someone in need.

“I chose Kyle Dally, a young man battling stage four skin cancer. Kyle’s fight was intensified by the financial burden of his life-saving medications, which cost a staggering R50 000 a month,” said Chad.

With each stride, Chad runs to bring attention to Kyle’s plight and raise the funds needed to give him a fighting chance.

Yet, the road to making a difference is never an easy one. Despite valiant efforts to secure sponsors and funding, the path remains challenging.

Nevertheless, Chad remains undeterred. Running solo six out of seven days a week, on Saturdays he gathers a passionate group of runners outside Sharondale Centre to run with him. Their support, both in spirit and contributions, acts as a lifeline for those battling cancer, demonstrating the incredible power of a united community.

Challenges

Reflecting on the obstacles he has overcome, Chad admits that every day presents new challenges.

“Early on, my body fought against the challenging demands of daily marathons, and on day 3, my feet swelled, forcing me to walk on the day. However, Throughout this journey, I believe God has played a role and it is becoming easy each day.

“As I continue with my journey, I document each step on social media, inviting others to join me on the quest to bring hope to cancer patients,” said Chad.
