Local cyclists ride to restore sight

Alberton cyclists rode for a cause during a road cycling event, Dis-Chem Ride for Sight 2023, held on February 19.

An overcast morning provided the perfect racing conditions for Alberton cyclists Gavin Kilpatrick, Linsay Engelbrecht, Heinrich Vermaak and many other entrants who took part in the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight 2023.

The Dis-Chem Ride for Sight 2023, recently held at the Boksburg City Stadium, was a cycle event hosted to help restore the gift of sight.

Distances included a 116kme Super Classic and the 62km Challenge, with the 116 km won by Joshua van Wyk in the Male Elite category.

According to Mayberry Park visually impaired triathlete, Gavin, the 62km distance included three blind tandem cyclists – Linsay, Heinrich and himself.

“A file of 25 tandems set off to complete a fast flat 62km route. There were a few attempts at breakaways, but they were soon reeled back into the mix. A final selection of seven tandems formed, which included the three blind tandem cyclists. As the group turned left at Carnival City, 10km to go, the racing heated up a notch and the group was cut down to five,” he said.

Gavin and his trusty pilot Roberto Gnudi of Panda Sportswear launched their attack 5km from the finish line and they were followed by two other tandem pairings.

After three clever tactical moves, the duo was able to break away for a solo victory as they crossed the finish line in style.

“Roberto and I will now turn our sites on the Cape Town Cycle Tour followed by the reunion at 2023 Triathlon South African Championships to be held in Buffalo City on March 19, where we will compete against each other in a sprint Distance Triathlon,” explained Gavin.

Their qualification at the National Championships will make them eligible to compete at the African Championships to be held in Egypt later this year.

He thanked all support received in their journey and also thanked Panda Sportswear and Uvex Sport for their continued sponsorship.
