Alberton’s own golf tour organiser

Kyle Lucas hosted the first ever Bushveld golf tour event on August 28.

Kyle Lucas, a professional golfer from Alberton, saw a need for a new golfing tour in South Africa.

According to him, the idea has been mulling about in his head for about three years but a month ago the Bushveld Tour began to see reality.

The idea for Lucas, former Brackenhurst Primary School and Glenvista High School learner, was to create an additional tour for players who are not necessarily able to play in the big tours, like the Sunshine Tour. Such a tour would not only be affordable but would also offer great prizes for the players to aspire to.

ā€œAdditionally, it can serve as a preparatory tour for players who aim to one day play in one of the big tours,ā€ said Lucas.

The tour is open to all players with a handicap lower than three, both professionals and amateurs. The first day of the tour took place on August 28 at Reading Country Club, where 65 avid golfers took part.

Extended holiday

ā€œMy wife and I came back to South Africa for a one-month holiday which then turned into a five-month holiday due to lockdown,ā€ said Lucas. Seeing an opportunity, he decided to start the Bushveld Tour. For him, the kick-off of his tour was a highlight.

As this is the first time he has done something like this, he was nervous about the outcome of the day but relied on his years of experience taking part in tours and tournaments.

ā€œIt went very well and a lot smoother than I expected. I enjoy the social aspect of the game.ā€

He said his love of the game played a big part in the success of the day. Playing golf since the age of eight and therefore being a part of the golf scene was always his plan.

ā€œAfter today, I realised the organising of the event is very enjoyable,ā€ said Lucas.Ā

He also received positive feedback from players who attended the first event.

Next leg

The tour will be played on eight different courses around Gauteng. Initially, the events will be held biweekly, but according to Kyle, there is room to grow to weekly events and multi-day events. The next leg of the tour will be played on September 9 in Centurion.
