Covid-19: Assisting women in boxing

Some much-needed relief to (some) of the country’s women boxers..

TLB Boxing Promotions has partnered with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, to bring some much-needed relief to some of the country’s women boxers who’ve been hit hard by the financial distress presented by Covid-19.

On August 29, more than 25 women in boxing comprising some of the country’s renowned boxers, ring officials, managers and promoters will be handed essential food hampers at a small event to take place in Soweto.

As per tradition, every August, TLB Boxing Promotions and a host of other boxing promoters across the country usually stage tournaments to celebrate and mark Women’s Month, thus guaranteeing an income for many.

However, having gone five months with no competitive fights has dealt a huge financial blow to the boxers, prompting TLB Boxing Promotions to offer a helping hand.

“We were obliged to do this in support of women boxers who have been financially affected by Covid-19. Most, if not all of them, solely depend on boxing for their income and under normal circumstances, most women boxers fight in August in celebration of Women’s Month which did not happen this year due to the pandemic,” said Joyce Kungwane, TLB Boxing Promotions.

“We are also grateful that Cosatu, through its president Zingiswa Losi, (who will also attend the food hamper hand over), has joined hands with us in our continued support for women in boxing, especially during these trying times,” said Kungwane.

The event will take place at 194 Central Western Jabavu, Borolo Butt House on Saturday, at 11 am.
