National women’s league to take centre stage

The championship, which will secure the top team a place in the national premier league, will take place at the Tsakane Stadium in Ekurhuleni from December 3 to 8.

THE table is set for the popular 2019 edition of the Sasol League National Championship kick-off.

The championship, which will secure the top team a place in the national premier league, will take place at the Tsakane Stadium in Ekurhuleni from December 3 to 8.

Nine teams, all provincial champions from the Sasol League, will battle it out for top honours.

Executive Ladies FC (Eastern Cape), Ixias FC (Free State), JVW FC (Gauteng), Sunflower FC (KwaZulu-Natal), Ma Indies FC (Limpopo), Nkomazi Ladies FC (Mpumalanga), Royal Queens FC (North West), Royal Wizards FC (Northern Cape) and Vasco Da Gama (Western Cape) all went into the hat when the draw was conducted to determine who will lift the trophy.

There are three groups of three teams each.

The top three will qualify for the semi-finals, alongside the best runner-up.

The semi-finals are scheduled for December 6, with the final taking place on December 8.

The winner will walk away with R200 000 with the runner-up pocketing R100 000, both guaranteed a place in the new South African Football Association (Safa) Women’s National League to bring the teams from 12 to 14 for the next season.

The draw was conducted by Gay Mokoena, the vice-president of Safa, Safa acting CEO Nozipho Mbatha, group brand manager at Sasol Gladwin White, Safa NEC member and chairperson of the Competitions Committee Mzwandile Maforvane, and Desiree Ellis, Banyana Banyana head coach.

Tshwane University of Technology won the competition in 2018 after defeating Durban Ladies FC in the final held in Kimberley.

This year the tournament kicks off with a clash between Royal Queens and Nkomazi Ladies at 10.30am, followed at 1pm by the match between Vasco da Gama and Ixias FC. JVW FC and Executive Ladies FC will round off the day’s play when they lock horns at 3.30pm.
