Chiefs stun Sundowns in cup match

Kaizer Chiefs stunned Mamelodi Sundowns to walk away with the Shell Helix Ultra Cup.

LOCAL southern side Kaizer Chiefs stunned the mighty Mamelodi Sundowns from Tshwane to walk away with the Shell Helix Ultra Cup over the weekend.

The final of the second edition of the Shell Helix Ultra Cup was played at FNB Stadium on October 12.

Chiefs were on target and played some of their best soccer this season, beating their neighbours 4-2 in front of a lively crowd.

Leonardo Castro took the player of the match award, his passion and collaboration throughout the game was matched by his outstanding performance, which saw him score three out of the four goals on Saturday.

“In any contest, there can only be one winner. This world-class tournament demonstrated that ultra-performance leads to ultra-victory. While there can only be one team and one winner, it takes the strength of an entire community, not just the players on the field, but the supporters on the stands. We would like to thank the fans who came out and chanted for their favourite team,” said Shell Downstream South Africa general manager for lubricants Anton Niemann.

“Shell is a household name that is synonymous with motoring. With a 100-year history in South Africa, it has given us the opportunity to play an important role across multiple industries in the country, not only as a premier oil company, but also as a committed corporate citizen and change agent, “said Hloniphizwe Mtolo, country chairperson of Shell Downstream South Africa.

“Congratulations to both teams for bringing their ultra-performance to the game today and well done to Amakhosi for coming out top. A big thank you to all our partners and stakeholders who made the day a success for the second year,” said Mtolo.

The Shell Helix Ultra Cup will have its third instalment in 2020, where we’ll see Amakhosi and Masandawana go head to head in the final addition of this prestigious game.
