All Star Games to take centre stage

All Stars Games on March 23.

The All Stars Games, which is a first in women soccer in the country, will be the focus point over the weekend.

This much anticipated tournament will take place on March 23 from 11am at Tsakane Stadium, Tsakane. Entrance is free of charge.

It is a first in women soccer where some of the national senior and junior team players will play alongside local players.

The Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, has unveiled the fixtures and teams to compete at the inaugural All Star Games.

The tournament will see four teams encounter some of the country’s top soccer professionals in a one-day contest.

Teams to play will feature some of the well-know soccer legends and present stars. Banyana Banyana captain, Janine van Wyk (Team Janine), former Banyana Banyana player, Portia Modise (Team Portia), Keneilwe Mathibela (Team Maestro) and Simphiwe Dludlu (Team Simphiwe), will load their teams with an array of young and developing talent drawn from u-20 national team, u-17 national team, Sasol Gauteng Women’s League.

Also, senior players from Banyana Banyana and legends of the game who have hung up their boots, will feature in the tournament.

“We can’t contain our excitement as we unveil the fixtures for the All-Star Games,” said Philasande Muvevi,

“These games will not only attract the spotlight to women’s football in South Africa and showcase the immense talent that exists, but will also hone the skills of tomorrow’s national team players,”said Muvevi.

“The winning team will donate football equipment to a beneficiary team that they would’ve selected to represent,” said tournament director Moonira Ramathula.

“Furthermore, each team will select a charitable organisation of their choice that will receive an equal share of donated goods collected at the stadium on the day,” Ramathula said.

The matches will be played in a round robin format with the first round of matches featuring Team Janine taking on Team Keneilwe, followed by Team Simphiwe against Team Portia.
