Alberton Cricket Club start off the year in fine style

JC Mauritz and captain Juanré Potgieter put on a massive match-winning partnership for the third wicket.

ALBERTON Cricket club’s premiership team, which is part of the Easterns Cricket Union, got their year off to a perfect start with a fine 167 run win over Actonville from Benoni.

The home side were first to have a bat and despite losing two early wickets, the pair of JC Mauritz and captain Juanré Potgieter put on a massive match-winning partnership for the third wicket.

Mauritz, in particular, played exceptionally in the situation. He took his singles and played every ball on its merits and when a bad ball came he took full advantage.

Mauritz eventually went out for 80 while his captain notched up a fine century and was eventually out for 102.

They were supported by Darryl Comody, who chipped in with a well played 52, which enabled the hosts to set the visitors from Benoni a target of 288 to win. In the end, the visitors were always up against it after the hosts posted the 287/7.

The visitors were eventually skittled out for a mere 120, leaving the winning margin of 167 runs to Alberton.

Only Matthew Corin with 32 and Soahil Khan with 20 were able to get runs of any substance together and they were bowled out with 13 overs to spare.

For the home side, with the ball, AD Coglano ripped through the visitors’ line up and ended up with figures of five for 18 in eight overs. Mauritz picked up one for 29, Tyrone White took two for 14, Gift Nzimande took one for 17 and Jacques Koster took one for 25.

This team will be a threat to anyone they play this year.

The reserve team had a far tighter game against CBC Old Boys away from home.

They were set 139 for victory and managed to chase it down with only one wicket left. Lorenzo Nunes was the hero with a well played 40 while all the bowlers chipped in. Tristan Schlebusch took two for 17, Sisa Peti took two for 22 and Bradley Williams two for 28.

WELL PLAYED: Left-handed batsman JC Mauritz set up the innings with 80 runs.
