The ultimate test for three-year-olds and fillies

Triple Crown and Triple Tiara will take place on March 2.

THE ultimate test for any horse is running in the Triple Crown and Triple Tiara.

The second leg of these magnificent races will take place on March 2 at Turffontein Racecourse.

The South African Triple Crown for three-year-olds is one of horseracing’s ultimate tests and comprises four top-level races, three at Turffontein and one at Kenilworth Racecourse.

The second leg is the R2-million SA Classic over 1 800m and the third is the R2-million SA Derby over 2 450m, both at Turffontein.

A bonus of R2-m awaits the horse that succeeds in winning all three legs, which is no mean feat.

Three horses have won the Triple Crown. Mighty Horse Chestnut, who many ranks as the best horse in South African racing history, won the inaugural event in 1999, Louis The King won the bonus in 2014 and Abashiri repeated the feat in 2016.

The R3.25-m Triple Tiara for fillies is the younger version of the Triple Crown.

The second leg is the R1-m SA Fillies Classic Grade 1 over 1 800m and a R1-m is the bonus for winning all three legs.

Igugu was the first filly to win the Triple Tiara in 2011 and Cherry On The Top emulated that feat in 2013.

The Triple Tiara and the three Johannesburg legs are sponsored by Wilgerbosdrift Stud.

There is ample parking at Turffontein Racecourse and the whole family is most welcome to come and support their horse for the races. Gates open at 11am.
