Stars shine at school athletics meet

Puma School of Speed #2 saw some 1 300 future junior track and field stars.

THE action-packed Puma School of Speed #2 saw some 1 300 future junior track and field stars participating at the Ruimsig Athletics Stadium on February 2.

The athletics meet accommodated athletes between the ages of 14 to 19.

JD Prinsloo from Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School won the boys’ u-19 400m in a deserving time of 48.49 seconds.

“The Puma School of Speed Series is a great opportunity for athletes to be noticed. The event also features really strong competition. I am proud to win today. It’s a feeling that cannot be described. I got to pick the fruit of all the hard work that I have put into my training,” said JD.

Carlin Enoch came second and David Seete finished third in the same race.

Carla Hattingh, also from Marais Viljoen High, claimed the top spot on the podium in the girls’ u-19 400m, finishing in of 56.04 seconds.“The series is a great opportunity to see where you rank against athletes from other schools. I agree with JD, coming first today is a case of picking the fruits. It’s also a good indication of what still needs to be improved,” said Carla.

Kirsten Arends came second and Xanté de Klerk finished third in the girls’ u-19 400m.
