The paddlers took the Klip to Vaal River race in the heat

Heat wave strikes as paddlers make their way in river race.

YET another heat wave hit Gauteng as the paddlers took the Klip to Vaal River Race which took place on November 11, hosted by the Johannesburg Canoe club based at Wemmer Pan in South Johannesburg.

The race took place from Meyerton Danie Maclean Park, to finish at the Watuni Canoe club, on the North West University grounds, in Vanderbijlpark at a distance of some 28km. There were few major rapids, although a wide number of obstacles, tight hard working winding corners in fast flowing current as well as a number of bubblies, little wave trains and currents, as well as the tough hard working sluggish Vaal river, a section of some 12km.

Although it was his first ever river race, young u-16 Thabo Selela from Johannesburg Canoe Club, situated at Wemmer Pan, thoroughly enjoyed his experience grinning widely at all obstacles. Despite the tough long 28km distance he finished comfortably in 2:28 minutes as the sixth finisher overall.
