SA golfers open their hearts for Cansa
The regional finals of an annual competition that draws around 40 000 golfers and involves roughly 800 golf clubs once again showcased the tremendous generosity of South African golfers in their support of the fight against cancer.
The Sanlam Cancer Challenge has just completed one of the most successful club and regional finals in its history, with one golf club raising a record R507 000 for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) and golfers between the ages of 11 and 82 competing nationwide for a place in the national finals.
The winners of the nationwide club competitions progressed to their respective regional finals, and the winners here have secured their place in the national finals to be played at Sun City’s Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Courses on October 8 and 9.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Northern Cape’s Magersfontein Memorial Golf Estate raised a record amount at their Sanlam Cancer Challenge Golf Day of R507 000, and thanks to an organising committee led by cancer survivor and retired judge Hennie Lacock, and advocate Lizanne van Niekerk whose father died of cancer. Their golf day this year also paid tribute to former member Martin van Schalkwyk who represented the club at the 2016 Sanlam Cancer Challenge finals and who died of cancer this year.
Even the country’s smallest golf clubs, some with as few as between 10 and 20 active members, have contributed to the cause.
In the Free State, Burgersdorp Golf Club raised R45 990. Further afield, Ladysmith Golf Club raised R2 320, Uniondale Golf Club added R7 110, Boggomsbaai Golf Club collected R3 570, Heidelberg Golf Club raised R5 565, and Albertinia – hometown of Louis Oosthuizen – raised R3 930.
The Cathcart Golf Club in the Eastern Cape honoured their youngest cancer survivor when they asked five-year-old Emmi Rossouw, who was diagnosed with cancer when she was only nine months old and has undergone chemotherapy ever since, to hand out the prizes at their Sanlam Cancer Challenge golf day.
The age range of the competing golfers included senior golfer Johan Terblanche from Aliwal North Golf Club, a cancer survivor, as well as the youngest player to qualify for the national finals in 11-year-old Drian du Plessis who won the C-division regional final in the Highveld Region.
