In defeat, Allies were not disgraced

Hoërskool Alberton falls out in the semi-finals.

HOËRSKOOL Alberton’s u-16 team took on Hoërskool Piet Retief in the semi-final of the Beeld Trofee. One look at the side from Piet Retief was enough to see that this was going to be the toughest game for Allies this season.

After putting pressure on Piet Retief early in the game, Allies were rewarded with a penalty which was taken by Damian Holl. As Holl started his run up the ball toppled over in the wind. He responded cleverly, picked up the ball and drop kicked it through the pole before the Piet Retief forwards could react. Piet Retief kept their composure and continued to put Allies under pressure. Eventually, they bullied their way over the line for a seven-pointer.

Allies, when they decided to take the game to their opponents looked classy. They were especially great on their right wing side of the field and were justly rewarded when wing Damian Rudman scored the first of his two tries. The conversion by Holl was good and Allies lead 10-7 at the break.

The second half was full of superb rugby by both teams, with the teams swopping tries until the last ten minutes when Piet Retief put it beyond doubt, scoring two tries in quick succession. The game was lost when it appeared Allies ran out of steam and gaps started to open up. The Piet Retief back three were very impressive in the last quarter, especially the fullback, who when he joined the backline looked like he was going to cut right through the home team.

Damian Rudman added another try as well as Rikus Swanepoel and Xander du Toit while Damian Holl added two more conversions. The final score of 33-29 was probably a fair reflection although no one in the stands can ever doubt the heart and commitment of the home side.

All in all, a super season for the team and they can be very proud of their season stepping out as winners of the NWU ad Golden Lions Trophies.
