Alberton Rugby Club too strong for Soweto

Alberton rugby club triumphs over Soweto on July 7.

ON July 7 at Alberton Rugby Club, the hosts came up against Soweto and were looking to get back to winning ways after the defeat suffered at the hands of Union.

Alberton had easily accounted for the visitors in the first round. This time around the Sowetan team was only able to field three teams, and some of the players played in two or three games. It was always going to be a tough afternoon for the visitors.

Alberton got a penalty early on but, it was missed. The referee, however, asked the kick to be retaken as it was illegal to charge a kick off a penalty, while on a conversion you can.

It didn’t help the kicker as he pulled the kick to the left of the uprights. It was not a terribly difficult kick, and in the playoffs, which the hosts are now sure to reach, they will have to be more accurate and take their opportunities.

Alberton did eventually score. By half-time, they had racked up 24 points with some great runs by the outside backs. The weather was cold and windy, conditions not conducive to running rugby.

Soweto had scored two penalties by the break after making the most of their scoring opportunities. But the fact that they only had six points was by no means a reflection of the rugby that they played.

They were positive and attacked from anywhere. What they lacked in skill, they made up for in heart. They at times stretched the Alberton defensive lines that it was only the desperate defence that prevented the visitors from scoring more points for their efforts.

In the second half, it was more of the same, but they were justly rewarded with an unconverted try. The final score was 45-11. By no means an indication of how both teams played. Alberton should have taken more opportunities, and Soweto deserved more too.
